Rethinking inclusivity: How an introvert and an extrovert adapted their leadership styles during the COVID-19 pandemic
The sudden shift to working remotely created a new set of challenges: team members who traditionally worked face-to-face were suddenly part of distanced, virtual teams, and no longer visible to each other – or to their leadership. As a leader, I had to consider the different personality styles on my team. What did introverts and extroverts need in this new environment? How could everyone on the team have a voice? How many online “happy hours” were too many, and what was the impact of being constantly connected? Determined to maintain an inclusive working environment, a colleague and I got together from across the globe to explore what it meant to be a leader of a fully-distributed workforce in a time of crisis. In this talk, we discuss our personal wins and failures as our organization of over 20,000 shifted to remote working, and what we learned from each other along the way.
